International Literacy Day
To quote from UNESCO’s website …
“International Literacy Day is celebrated each year on 8 September. The objective is to highlight the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies. The theme of this year’s celebration is Literacy and Sustainable Development. Today nearly 800 million people aged over 15 are illiterate and two-thirds of them are women.“
The PEI Literacy Alliance reports that “about 30% of PEI adults have very low literacy skills”.
You can encourage literacy in yourself and others by:
- making books available
- taking time to read
- talking about what you read and
- showing that reading is important.
To help celebrate International Literacy Day we are asking the College community to send us a note about a book (or magazine, etc.) you’d recommend or had great memories for you.

This is the last week of work for Tamara, our summer student extraordinaire in Charlottetown. Her strong arms and effervescent personality have helped us through all the grunt work involved in moving a library. Thanks, Tamara! We’ll miss you!
Here are some views taken August 15, 2006. Progress!

In Charlottetown Centre, we’ve spent the last three weeks dismantling a library, and now we’re putting it all back together, one book/video/journal at a time, in our new location.
Here’s what it looked like today (July 26):
